Our service

What kind of issues we offer help for:

The Psychological Support and Wellbeing Service is here to help you address personal or emotional problems which may impact your time at the EUI and help you realise your full academic and personal potential. You can bring difficulties which may or may not be related to your academic or work career. Our service is a general psychology support service and our psychologists are trained to help you through a wide variety of issues such as:

  • Difficulties with regard to relationships (partner/family/peers)
  • Mental health difficulties (e.g. Anxiety and depression)
  • Problems with transitions and adjustments to the new environment
  • The impact of difficult life events, such as bereavement or a relationship breakdown
  • Sex related issues and sexual identity
  • Issues related to physical health problems
  • Harassment and bullying problems
  • Sleeping problems, excessive rumination or overthinking
  • Other topics, such as low self-esteem, dealing with doubts, uncertainty and life challenges

As a psychology service within an international academic institution, we are also equipped to offer help with:

  • Managing time effectively and finding a new rhythm during the PhD process
  • Dealing with mood swings regarding motivation in the research work
  • Dealing with self-expectations, expectations of the supervisor
  • Procrastination
  • Career choices

The Psychological Support and Wellbeing Service is not the right support if:

  • You or a person around you are in a crisis situation – if you are, you should call 118 or go to your nearest Accident and Emergency (A&E) department
  • You need some specialised help. There are some mental health problems or life situations that require some specific form of therapy or a more specialised approach. In this case, we are happy to refer you to professionals in the Florentine area.
  • You want to do a long-term psychotherapeutic work. Unfortunately, offering this type of service goes beyond our resources but we are happy to refer you to some professionals in the Florentine area.
  • You need a diagnosis for Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) like Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder (AD(H)D), Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASCs), dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia. Again, we are happy to refer you to a specialised centre in the Florence area.

If you are unsure about whether or not we can help you, we suggest scheduling a first appointment with us so to understand together the best way to address your request.

Please, do not hesitate to contact us when you experience a problem which prevents you from achieving your goals and /or from enjoying your life. Remember that you do not need to have a serious problem or symptom to access our service. We believe that it is far better to come and see us as soon as something is worrying you rather than leaving the issue to grow arms and legs.
