Biography

Andrew Geddes is a Professor of Migration Studies and the Director of the Migration Policy Centre. His work focuses on migration politics and policy-making that has included a focus on; migration policy and politics in Europe; comparative regional level of migration governance; and relations between migration research, migration policies and associated practices. During his career, he has led and participated in a large number of major projects on aspects of international migration working with a wide range of academic and non-academic partners.

Between 2024 and 2027 he is the coordinator of a large-scale EU-funded Horizon Europe project with 11 partner institutions and organisations entitled ‘Innovating to Enhance Dialogues on Migration Research and Policies’ (INNOVATE) that seeks to strengthen engagement with research evidence on migration through creation of a Migration Research to Policy Co-Lab comprising a Research Exchange, Engagement Hub and Training Facility.

For the period 2014-19 he was awarded an Advanced Investigator Grant by the European Research Council for a project on the drivers of global migration governance that analysed how ‘actors’ of various types in migration governance systems such as political leaders, officials, international organisations and civil society organisations make sense of the issues and challenges that they face and how these understandings then shape their actions.

He has published extensively on global migration, with a particular focus on policy-making and the politics of migration and on regional cooperation and integration. Recent publications include The Politics of Migration and Immigration in Europe (2017, Sage, co-authored with Peter Scholten); The Dynamics of Regional Migration Governance (2019 Edward Elgar, edited with Marcia Vera Espinoza, Leila Hadj-Abdou and Leiza Brumat) and Governing Migration Beyond the State: Europe, North America, South America and Southeast Asia in a Global Context (2021, Oxford University Press).
