Association of University Teachers (2006), 'Survey of Fixed Term and Hourly Paid Staff', The Higher Education Union, UK.

Abstract

Report of on-line survey of academic and academic-related employees in UK higher education, focusing on staff employed on fixed-term contracts, and on those employed on an hourly-paid basis. There was some overlap between the two categories, with some fixed-term staff working on an hourly-paid basis.

Over 1,200 employees responded. Of these approximately 1,100 identified themselves as having fixed-term contracts, and approximately 200 were hourly-paid. Three-quarters of the respondents were AUT members.

The report highlights some of the difficulties and poor conditions encountered at work by fixed-term and hourly-paid employees in UK higher education.
