HAEU releases oral history interview with Jean-Claude Trichet

Posted on 19 April 2018

The Historical Archives of the European Union has produced an oral history interview with Jean-Claude Trichet, who was President of the European Central Bank between 2003 and 2011.

Trichet, who is currently Chairman of the board of directors of Bruegel, visited the Historical Archives to give an interview to Emmanuel Mourlon-Druol, Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow’s Adam Smith Business School and Jean Monnet Fellow at the EUI, on 16 February 2018.

The private interview took place in the framework of a larger series of events titled “Leaders Beyond the State” where all former presidents of European institutions are invited to the European University Institute for a public interview to record their experiences as leaders in transnational government. The series of interviews is organized by the School of Transnational Governance at the EUI, in collaboration with the Department of History and Civilization and the Historical Archives of the European Union.

The interview is now available in our holdings, as a part of the oral history project “Leaders Beyond the State” and may be consulted by researchers interested in the history of European integration. It gives insight into Trichet’s experiences as a transnational leader as well as his views on key economic issues such as the workings of the European Central Bank, the creation of the Euro andthe Treaty of Maastricht.

The next interview, which will be recorded for research purposes, will take place on the 20th of April 2018 with José Manuel Barroso, former President of the European Commission.
