The Library supports the research, teaching, and learning mission of the EUI by providing access to information resources, research tools, and study spaces. These rules are designed to ensure that all users can benefit from a safe, fair, and respectful environment.
Who can use the Library
Entry to the Library is for EUI members and authorised users according to the Library's admissions policy. Requests from external researchers and visitors are subject to approval.
Library users should carry a valid EUI card to be shown at the request of the Library staff.
The Library opening hours are published on the website and may vary during holidays or special events. Users are kindly asked to check updates before their visit.
Library spaces are for academic use, including reading rooms, meeting rooms, and lockers. Booking is required for the Library meeting rooms.
Library conduct
The Library maintains a respectful and quiet environment where all users are expected to act considerately and support the shared pursuit of research and study.
- Treat other Library users, Library staff, and Library property with respect and courtesy.
- Maintain silence in reading and study areas.
- Use mobile phones only in the Social Room; conversations are not permitted elsewhere.
- Observe the no-smoking policy (including vaping and electronic cigarettes) throughout Library premises.
- Avoid behaviour that may disturb or inconvenience others.
- Avoid bringing large bags into study areas.
- Allow the Library staff to check the borrowed items, if the security system goes off.
- Do not bring food or drinks (except bottled water) into the Library, except in the Social Room.
- Do not bring animals into the Library, except registered support animals, in accordance with the EUI Pet policy.
- Report any improper behavior within the Library to the Library staff.
Using research materials and equipment
Users are responsible for the careful use of all Library materials, furniture, equipment, and property. Any damage or loss may result in fines or other sanctions.
Library research materials must not be removed or accessed without proper checkout or authorisation.
- Borrowing privileges are available to EUI members and strictly personal. Using another person’s library card for any reason is expressly forbidden.
- Loan limits, loan periods, and renewal options vary by user category.
- Renewals are permitted unless the item is reserved or the user’s account is expiring.
- Items must be returned on time and in good condition.
- Fines or fees may be applied for overdue, damaged, or lost items.
Reproducing materials
Users must comply with copyright and licensing regulations when reproducing Library materials. Printing, copying, and scanning are permitted for personal research or study only.
Unauthorised reproduction, distribution, or commercial use of Library materials is strictly prohibited.
Data and privacy
The Library adheres to the EUI Data Protection Policy and applicable EU regulations. Personal data collected for Library purposes (e.g., borrowing records and Library account) is solely for administrative and service purposes and is handled securely to protect user privacy.
Computers, Wi-Fi, and digital resources
EUI network services and Library computers are provided for academic and research use only. Personal devices may connect via Wi-Fi, but users are responsible for maintaining the security of their own devices data and for complying with the network’s use policy.
Software and databases licensed by the Library are for individual academic use only and must not be shared, redistributed, or used in violation of copyright or the Library’s terms of use. Violations of restrictions or any other terms of use may result in the loss of your electronic access rights and the possible imposition of further institutional sanctions.
Safety and belongings
The Library is not responsible for lost, unattended or stolen items.
- Use Library equipment and furniture responsibly to prevent injury or damage.
- Report any hazards, spills, or unsafe conditions to Library staff immediately.
- Follow fire safety, emergency, and evacuation procedures as displayed throughout the Library.
- Ensure bags and equipment or any personal belongings do not obstruct walkways or exits, especially emergency exits.
Institutional sanctions
Failure to respect rules may lead to the application of sanctions by the Library.
The Library reserves the right to bring cases of users seriously offending the present rules, to the attention of the Institute's authorities and to seek from them appropriate sanctions within the framework of the EUI's Disciplinary Regulations.
