A Joint Event between the EUI MWP and the International Panel on Social Progress (IPSP)

19 October 2018, 13:00-15:00
Badia, Emeroteca

A Panel discussion led by Richard Bellamy (Director of the MWP)

The International Panel for Social Progress brought together nearly 300 researchers from around the world, including a number of current and former EUI Professors and Max Weber Fellows, under the chairmanship of Amartya Sen. They worked for three years to examine the prospects for social progress in the light of today's social sciences. It’s first report, Rethinking Society for the 21st Century, was published by Cambridge University Press in May 2018.

This event discusses both the report in general and two chapters from Volume 2, Chapter 9, on Democracy and the Paradoxes of the Rule of Law and Chapter 14, Democracy and the Challenge of Inequality, that were coordinated respectively by Donatella della Porta (SNS), a former EUI Professor in SPS, and Richard Bellamy, Director of the MWP. They will be joined by Marc Fleurbaey, Robert E. Kuenne Professor in Economics and Humanistic Studies, Professor of Public Affairs and the University Center for Human Values at the University of Princeton, who led the entire project, Tom Christiano (University of Arizona), and Mieke Verloo (Radbound University) who contributed to chapter 14.

This event follows on from one on the 18th October at UniFi.
