Network Printing Known Issues

Access Denied on Printer After Restarting Windows

Problem

You may not be able to print to (any) network printer after rebooting your private or Institute laptop.

The network printer is still correctly mapped (installed), you are able to print (i.e. no error message shows up), but your print-jobs seem not to reach the multifunction printers.

If you check the printer in Windows, it shows up with an "Access denied" (yellow exclamation mark) status.

Technical Explanation

Due to a security measure introduced by Microsoft on all Operating Systems from MS Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) onwards, your credentials (username and password) to access the printserver are not kept among sessions anymore (Windows does not store them even if you tick the Remember password box).

Platform / Software Affected

  • MS Windows XP from SP2 onwards
  • MS Windows Vista
  • MS Windows 7

Solution

To override this security measure, you need to force authentication to the printserver once per working session (i.e every time you restart your system/laptop).

There are several ways to do this and four are documented here below. Choose the one which is best for you:

  1. Delete the printer and reinstall it (slowest method)
  2. Click on Start  > Run and type:

    \\printserver

  3. Open Windows Explorer and in the address bar, type:

    \\printserver

  4. Download (we suggest to save it on your Windows’ Desktop), unzip and use (double-click) the below script:

    Access EUI Printers (PrintServer)

All four methods will prompt for your EUI credentials (username, password) and your username should be written in the format:

iuedom\username (e.g. iuedom\jsmith)

If a window showing all your printers shows up, it means the procedure worked correctly.

Cannot Reach PrintServer When Trying to Map Network Printer

Problem

When trying to access the printserver, you get Host unknown or not reachable error (or similar).

Technical Explanation

This is generally a network problem laptop-sides and mostly happens because either:

  • you have not set up your Network configuration (DNS and Domain suffixes) as per Network Connection Configuration documentation;
  • you have a restrictive (mostly third-party) Firewall preventing access to local networks (e.g. ZoneAlarm);
  • you have not run Network Setup Wizard (on Windows XP); or
  • you have a malware preventing you to access local networks.

To check whether this is a network problem, try to Map your Private Area on the G: Drive : failing to reach your homeserver as well is evidence of a network problem on your laptop.

Please Note: being able to surf the web is NOT evidence of properly configured Network settings!

Platform / Software Affected

  • MS Windows XP

Solution

Try to verify and eliminate one by one the causes listed in the Technical Explanation section above.

Cannot Find IUEDOM When Browsing the EUI Network

Problem

When browsing the EUI Network in search for printserver, EUI's domain (IUEDOM) is not visible.

This may also apply when trying to map your own G: drive or other shared areas .

Technical explanation

IUEDOM is not showing up when connected via Wireless. You will need to connect through wired network (cable) in order to connect to the printer (and/or map servers).

Platform / software Affected

  • Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and earlier

Solution

  • Turn off your AirPort to avoid any further automatic connection to the EUI wireless (EUI-WiFi)
  • Turn off your Mac
  • Plug in a network cable
  • Restart your Mac

Please Note: turning off AirPort and switching to wired network within the same working session will NOT work: you MUST restart your Mac after switching!

Once your network resources (homeserver, printserver, etc.) are successfully mapped via wired connection, they will also be available via Wireless in future.

Cannot Find NetworkPrinter When Browsing the EUI Network/IUEDOM

Problem

When you browse the EUI network/IUEDOM in order to connect to the printserver, you are unable to find it.

Technical Explanation

This is due to the way Mac OS browses the network when looking for printers (using a very old protocol called WINS). After a printserver is shutdown and restarted due to maintenance, which takes place at regular intervals during the month, it takes some time for Mac OS to take awareness of the printserver’s availability again.

Platform / Software Affected

  • Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and earlier

Solution

To avoid this you can do one of two things:

  • If you have Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), follow the Mac OS X guide
  • Connect to the alternative printserver called eagle instead of PrintServer
