Software Configurations

The standard Windows-based EUI desktop computers are based on two software configurations (often referred to as clones or images) called Staff and Research (or ResLab).

Both are based on Windows 10 Enterprise operating system [1] and feature Office 2016:

Research Configuration

The Research Configuration is devoted to research and as such is made available to:

  • Researchers, including Visiting Researchers
  • Teaching Assistants [2]
  • Fellows [2]
  • Part-time Academic Staff (Professors) [2]
  • Visiting Professors [2]
  • Guests

This configuration is pre-installed both in Computer Rooms and hot-desk Offices made available by the Department, Programme or Project of affiliation for the above categories.

This configuration is very "dynamic", meaning that its research software (or the entire configuration) gets updated very often, sometimes just a few days after a new software version is released by its developer.

To facilitate these continuous upgrades, the configuration has restrictions in terms of storing data locally on the computer as well as installing extra (own) software.

The main features compared to the Staff Configuration (see further below) are:

Please Note: for a full outline of standard software installed and other information (hardware specifications, guides and tutorials, etc.) check the Computer Rooms menu on the left.

Staff Configuration

The Staff configuration is typically made available to:

  • Administrative Staff
  • Full-time Academic Staff (Professors)

and as such is available only in assigned Offices.

This configuration is more "personal" and the main differences towards the Research Configuration are:

[1] = Mac desktops feature ONLY the Staff Configuration (with a few limitations). Please note that Macs are NOT a standard hardware available at the EUI and not all categories are eligible. A specific request should be made to the ICT Service (if full-time Academic Staff) or to your Service of affiliation (if Administrative Staff).

[2] = Some exceptions can be made available for this category of users on request.

[3] = PCs assigned to Fellows do not have this restriction by default.
