The Master-of-Arts in Transnational Governance (MTnG) is the first of its kind, tailor-made to educate and train a new breed of policy leader able to navigate the unprecedented issues our world will face during the next decade and beyond.  

Complex forces at play in today’s governance frameworks are now the rule, rather than the exception – a multiplicity of issue-areas and actors, whether public or private, local or international, governmental or NGO.

The challenges resulting from these interdependencies will prevail at an accelerating rate due to technology’s rapid disruption of almost every industry affecting the political balance of power in every country. Most traditional public policy, public administration and international relations degrees take the State as the main unit of analysis and policy action.

The Master in Transnational Governance is designed to provide the knowledge necessary to navigate and excel in a context where the processes of governing take place beyond the State. 

The European Union is known as one of the world’s most advanced laboratories in the methods of transnational governance. With this as the point of departure, our master's programme was developed to extend these methods beyond Europe, to Africa, the Americas, Australasia and beyond.  

A two-year full-time program blends foundational study with hands-on training and networking

The programme is designed to examine the most pressing policy issues of our time through an interdisciplinary lens, transcending the limits of a single country or region by bringing together perspectives from political science, sociology, economics, law, history and business/technology. 

Built upon a uniquely analytical approach that considers the broader impact of governing beyond nation states, students learn not only which policy tools to consider, but how best to combine and orchestrate these tools in order to design effective transnational policies that are outcome-driven. 

Both modular and flexible, the core curriculum is designed to examine key transnational themes such as migration, climate change, gender governance, digital policy, trade and finance, and peace and security, to name a few.  

Students are required to declare a focus in one or more consolidation theme areas at the end of the first year in order to direct their professional development internship experience. The second year will require focused study in their selected thematic areas of specialisation to prepare them for proactive career development activities.

The School of Transnational Governance (STG) is working in partnership with some of the world’s finest academic institutions to offer international education programmes, including exchange, study abroad and joint degrees.

These are excellent opportunities for STG’s students seeking a broader transnational experience for consolidating their knowledge and training paths.

At the same time, it offers exchange students the opportunity to discover the internationally oriented and professionally relevant social science curriculum of the EUI and STG, distinctive teaching methods by renowned scientists and practitioners, and a lively academic community life. 

Become Part of the European University Institute

The European University Institute (EUI) is a unique international centre for doctoral and post-doctoral studies and research in the social sciences. The four departments – Economics, History and Civilization, Law, and Political and Social Sciences – routinely host scholars from more than 70 countries, studying for the Institution’s doctorate or the one-year LLM. 

The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies focuses on inter-disciplinary, comparative and policy research on the major issues affecting European as well as global societies, while the Max Weber Programme for Post-doctoral Studies prepares fellows for a career in academia. 

The EUI library boasts around half a million volumes in the Institute’s specialty areas, attracting numerous researchers. The campus also hosts the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU), which provides unparalleled insight into the successful integration and ongoing political relations of the European Union.
