World Values Survey


Data description

WVSThe World Values Survey provides data on social, cultural and political change worldwide. The WVS consists of seven national sample surveys conducted in over 90 countries since 1981 using a common questionnaire with variables on beliefs, values, economic development, democratisation, religion, gender equality, social capital and subjective well-being. The survey is coordinated by the World Values Survey Association (Stockholm).

Time period

Seven waves of the World Values Survey are available:

  • Wave 7 (2017-2022)
  • Wave 6 (2010-2014)
  • Wave 5 (2005-2009)
  • Wave 4 (1999-2004)
  • Wave 3 (1995-1998)
  • Wave 2 (1990-1994)
  • Wave 1 (1981-1984)

How to access data

Downloading is via the WVS platform.

Data are available in Stata, SPSS, R, SAS and csv formats.

The WVS Association also provides a data analysis tool to facilitate cross-country comparisons.
