Network Resource Unreachable

Problem

When trying to access a network resource (Personal Area, network printer, etc.), you get a "Host unknown or not reachable" (or similar) error.

Platform / Software Affected

  • GNU/Linux
  • Mac OS X
  • Windows

Solution

This is generally a network problem computer side and mostly happens because either:

  • you have not configured your network settings (DNS and Domain suffixes) as per Network Connection Configuration instructions
  • you have a restrictive (mostly third-party) Firewall preventing access to local networks (e.g. ZoneAlarm, etc.)
  • you have not run the Network Setup Wizard (e.g. on Windows XP)
  • you have a malware preventing you to access local networks (Windows only)

Please Note: being able to surf the web is NOT evidence of properly configured network settings!
