A lifetime at the EUI

On the eve of his retirement, Eric Gallo speaks of the unthinkable evolution that has taken place at the EUI across five decades.

Eric Gallo has worked at the EUI since its doors opened in 1976. Here he recalls his exchanges with heads of state and royalty, and how the Institute has grown into the vibrant place we see today (Video also available in HD).

EUI PhD Researchers

PaulinaGranadosDuring the four years of research to complete my PhD in Economics at the EUI I was one of the many users of resources from the ICT Service. The good quality of the service, the effectiveness to solve most of the technical problems I faced and the access to the necessary software according to my research through the years was invaluable.

As one of the EUI students’ representatives during the academic year 2007/2008, I had the opportunity to work together with the ICT Service in many projects oriented to improve the service. One of them was the development of a high speed computing platform, essential for the applied work of the Department of Economics. The proposal was based on the needs of professors and researchers together with the ICT Service technical advice. Besides, “laptop service points” to help researchers with technical problems with their personal machines and periodical meetings with the students’ representatives reveal the successful user oriented policy of the ICT Service at the EUI.

Andrei SirchenkoFor better or worse, modern research in economics often relies on heavy computational tasks. For sure, writing my PhD dissertation at the EUI required a lot of them. Frankly, it would be impossible to complete the dissertation on time without the remote and parallel computing facilities and User Support office at the Economics department, provided by the ICT service. The magic undercover “Citrix team” does an excellent job in software troubleshooting and even fine-tuning it to the users’ needs.I hope that I will have this kind of IT support after leaving the EUI.
